Helpful Tips to Get a Job in a New York City Restaurant

There’s never been a better time to enter New York City’s restaurant industry than now, as today’s robust job market offers opportunities for experienced workers or first-timers to return or start from scratch. But landing an employment gig requires more than passion or a resume alone: OpenTable and Indeed recently held a virtual workshop that brought in restaurant experts and their top tips on landing the ideal role.

New York City restaurants are in high demand, making it essential to stand out with an effective resume and cover letter that are clean and professional. Even if you have no prior restaurant industry experience, volunteer work, customer service/teamwork examples, gig work experience and other relevant experiences could demonstrate why you would make an ideal candidate for employment in this sector.

1. Make sure that your cover letter is tailored specifically to the restaurant in which you wish to apply, and clearly demonstrates how you would add value. Keep it short and direct as hiring managers tend to be busy people; make sure your skills match what the manager needs such as someone who enjoys cooking and can converse confidently about food.

2. Be prepared to work hard. Restaurants in New York City can be hectic environments, and to succeed you must be able to adapt quickly to changing needs of each table while being comfortable engaging customers in conversations and making small talk. If working with the public is not your forte then perhaps a restaurant may not be your ideal career path.

3. Don’t be intimidated to take on lower-level positions.

You don’t have to be an “A-List server” to secure employment at a restaurant, but you must be capable of handling the pressures of fast-paced environments. Many restaurant workers begin as bussers or back-of-house employees before eventually progressing up the chain of command.
